A View To A Kill

Rating: 3

A View To A Kill uses its theme tune less than other Bond scores. In fact, this is a noticably less melodic score. The music is mostly functional — suspenseful and interesting because of an absorbing combination of low instruments and slow, soft beating timpani with high instruments such as flute and strings engineered with lots of reverb and echo. Nonetheless, this is a subdued James Bond score — darker and atmospheric.

The action theme impresses. This is the life of the score. It is a throwback to the main theme of OHMSS, almost making verbatim re-use of that score’s distinctive descending backing track. Typical Bond-esque strings add silk to the gritty synthesisers and guitars which add guts to an excited brass theme. The love theme, based on the main theme, is a solid secondary pleasure.
