On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

Rating: 5

James Bond music has its parameters, but Barry always found a way to express himself originally within those confines. Here, he deliciously melds orchestral, rock and electronic music. Barry composed two of his best themes for this score. The main theme, a ‘killer tune’, sets alpine horns against the descending harmony of strings and moog, to guitars and other energetic pop devices. The second, We Have All The Time In The World is an autumnal romantic ballad with a wonderful roll of the strings. These themes give remarkable contrast, lending Barry the ability to flip easily between the sweetest romance to the grittiest action.

OHMSS is a truly classic score. Apart from its top show tunes it includes nail-biting chase cues, silky jazz and tense dramatic cues. Of particular note are the exalting sweep of Journey To Blofeld’s Hideaway; and Blofeld’s Plot and Gumbold’s Safe, both of which use interesting motifs and devices, as well as demonstrating Barry’s masterclass in the construction and release of suspense.
