This score is often lumped in with the general malaise that happened in Barrys work between Out Of Africa and his forced career break in 1988. To some extent, thats fair. It is a forgotten film that went straight to video in the UK and drew far from a classic score. Even so, just as B-movies are sometimes interesting, so is this B-score. True, the recurring chase theme is basic, yet it has dramatic bite. The main theme is a fairly routine one for piano, strings and harmonica yet is evokes the deep south well and, thanks to the swell in the strings, has an interesting harmonic twist. The internal suspense music may seem uneventful at a glance, yet on closer scrutiny it is found to be built on secondary themes that have an intriguing shape. I would argue it is more interesting than the internal suspense music of a more headling grabbing score like Basic Instinct.
This is not a great Barry score by any means but it is better than it is being remembered for. More interesting than The White Buffalo, it could certainly bear a CD release.
