Dutchman

Rating: 5

For the praised film, which presents a claustrophobic conflict of racialism and sexuality, Barry didn’t compose a full score, just a single theme that dials in sparsely through the film. It is a brilliant piece of pure percussion writing. Percussive instruments of various timbres are carefully applied, rhythmically in layers to provide ever increasing rounds of escalation, tension and release. The effect both on screen and on album is breathtaking.

Though best loved for his broader orchestral scores, Barry’ small, experimental, original work is highly laudible. One only wishes there were a few more like it.
